Windham, CT April 9, 2018—The Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) named its Outstanding Coaches of the Year, and two members of Windham High School’s coaching staff have been selected. Ken Valliere, Head Girls Basketball Coach and James Thompson, Head Girls Outdoor Track Coach have been selected by their coaching peers for this honor, and will be recognized at the Connecticut High School Coaches Recognition Dinner on May 10, 2018 at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville.
Coach Ken Valliere has coached in the district for the past 25 years. Under his guidance as Head Varsity Girls Basketball coach, Valliere’s teams have won two State Championships, and several league titles. Ken has coached numerous All-State players.
“Coach Valliere is known sets the bar high for his players, on and off the court,” says Windham Athletic Director Patrick Risley. “He expects his players to excel in the classroom, and behave appropriately during the school day. He has well-developed practice plans and demands an excellent work ethic from his players.”
In addition to coaching Varsity Girls Basketball, Valliere serves as Head Varsity Softball coach, Junior Varsity Girls Soccer coach, and previously served as Head Varsity Baseball coach for 18 years.
Coach James Thompson has coached in the district for the past 20 years, and oversees the Windham Middle School Athletic Program. Coach Thompson has coached several league championships, and has coached numerous track athletes that have placed at the Divisional, State Open, and New England Championships.
Coach Thompson has volunteered and served as the Robert Haddad Windham Cross Country meet director for the past 10 years. This spring will be James 20th year as Head Girls Outdoor Track. He has also served as Head Field Hockey coach, and has been AssistantCoach for Indoor Track, Cross Country, and Volleyball. He has also coached Cross Country at Windham Middle School.
“We are beyond proud that Coach Thompson and Coach Valliere were selected to be recognized as CHSCA’s Outstanding Coaches of the Year in their respective sports” says Risley. “Windham has a long, proud tradition of highly competitive athletics teams. These two men with deep experience and commitment to our students have contributed to that competitiveness.”
Previously, Windham High School Coach Rebecca Howard has also received this honor. She was recognized as Coach of the Year for Special Olympics in 1995 and again as Indoor Track and Field Coach in 2014.
Members of the Windham community interested in attending the May 10 dinner may reserve tickets through the Windham High School Athletics department, but please reserve no later than April 13. . Tickets are $46 each, and only cash or check is accepted.
