We are proud to recognize our district’s students and staff members who coordinated fundraisers and collections during the holiday season in support of our community:
  • North Windham School collected new socks for the No Freeze Shelter, and conducted a Helping Hands food drive for the Covenant Soup Kitchen. 
  • Windham Center School also conducted a food drive the first week of December. 
  • Staff members at the Windham Early Childhood Center and Windham Center Schools selected children to support through the Salvation Army and other adopt-a-family programs
  • The Community Outreach Committee at Windham Middle School also coordinated a food drive for the Covenant Soup Kitchen, and staff members organized a giving tree for families.
  • To benefit the United Way, Windham Center School hosted a pajama day and Central Office staff raffled homemade treats. 
  • Windham High School offered free admission to its Game of the Week basketball game December 19 with the donation of personal care items. 
  • Natchaug, North Windham and Sweeney Schools also hosted a Pajama Day providing students and staff the opportunity to wear their pajamas to school for a small fee in support of the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, part of a statewide initiative. 
  • Windham Administrators’ Association also made generous donations to Windham Area Interfaith Ministry, the Covenant Soup Kitchen and the district’s Windham Three Kings Day Celebration.

The Kerri Gallery and Horizons, the district’s partners in the STORYLINE Project, invited a select group of Grade 9 students to reminisce on camera about participating as third graders in the first year of the STORYLINE, and the role of art in their lives. Windham High School students Nineliez Aguilar, Judith Gomez Vera, Ricardo Cruz Dominguez, and Yaron Roman were videotaped at Eastern Connecticut State University’s digital production studio, and excerpts of these interviews will be included in a video being created about STORYLINE. For several years, Windham elementary students have worked with nationally renowned illustrator Barbara McClintock and other artists in the classroom, and participate in a field trip to the Kerri Gallery to learn to tell stories through their artwork.

Congratulations to teacher Jessica Sager’s Grade 3 students who reached an important milestone in late fall. If the class could earn 100 “Natchaug Bucks”, the school promised to start installing a 40-gallon saltwater tank to bring the marine science curriculum alive in their classroom. We acknowledge Natchaug School staff for this creative way to motivate students to put extra work into their studies.

Bravo to members of the bands, choruses and orchestra of Windham Middle School and C.H. Barrows STEM Academy who performed winter concerts for their families and classmates in December. We know that participation in music brings many benefits to students, and we acknowledge the music department staff for ringing in the holidays with these performances.

The Lock-in for Literacy and Culture at Windham High School is scheduled for May 1, 2020, and the Write Idea Writing Tutors and Advisor Dara Bowling are busy promoting the experience among Windham High School students. They have created a promotional video to generate interest among students and sponsors, and we encourage you to view it.  Already more than 100 students have requested books by the 2020 featured author Jenny Torres Sanchez to begin preparing for the Lock-in.

  • Thank you to the staff members who have taken on different positions throughout the district in support of our students and school. Their dedication to the “team” during difficult budget and staffing times is greatly appreciated!
  • Melissa Gordon, District Math Coach, temporarily filling in as a Grade 8 Math Teacher at Windham Middle School,
  • David Eichorn, District Math Coach, temporarily filling in as a Grade 5 Teacher at Windham Center School to cover a maternity leave,
  • Jose Camacho, Community Organizer/District Attendance Specialist relocated to Windham Middle School to support family engagement initiatives when their Family Liaison resigned,
  • Randall Conway, Director of Guidance, relocated to Windham Middle School to sure up the early intervention process for students struggling behaviorally.
  • Andrew McNamar, Windham High School Building Coach, is temporarily providing Reading Intervention at Windham Middle School during a medical leave

Congratulations to the following C. H. Barrows staff members as they have had their session proposals accepted for presentation at the 2020 National Science Teaching Association Conference (NSTA) in Boston this spring:  Nicole Bay, Chelsea Greer, Carolina Mendez, Pat McMahon, Jan Tomanelli,  Brittany LoPriore and Nicole Vitello.  NSTA is a national organization that believes deeply in science teachers learning from one another, so we are excited to know seveb of Windham’s very own will be leading those learning sessions.

We gratefully acknowledge the creative ways that schools celebrated the period leading up to the holidays as a technique to promote attendance and to celebrate school community. Sweeney held a school-wide singalong, and the fifth grade performed "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" for the school.  Windham High School hosted a Spirit Week with unique dressing themes, culminating with a school-wide assembly, and viewing of the movie “Elf” after school sponsored by the seniors.  Windham Middle School celebrated students with perfect attendance, featuring them on a lit-up bulletin board outside of the office.  Windham High School will also be hosting a carnival for students with good attendance records on the day they return from winter break.  Charles H. Barrows Academy hosted a carnival on the day before vacation, with each class taking a turn to participate.
