Voice4Change

Good afternoon Windham Community,

Governor Lamont, Commissioner Charlene Russell-Tucker, Representative Susan Johnson, and Senator Mae Flexer recently visited Windham High School, where they were given a warm Whippet Welcome!

They came to hear Windham High School student groups present their Voice4Change proposals.  The Voice4Change program is an initiative of the Connecticut Department of Education (CSDE), which plans to invest more than $1.5M to fund student-driven ideas for Connecticut schools, and gives students a chance to have input by submitting proposals and voting on projects for their schools.

Four student groups pitched their ideas to compete for a chance to wind funding for their projects.   The four proposals submitted were:

Whippet Dawgpound:  A $15,000 proposal for an in-school store where students and staff can purchase Whippet branded clothing (Daniel Alba, Miguel Garcia Zamudio, Asia Jones, Cassidy O’Connor)

  • Project Courtyard:  A $14,000 proposal to renovate the school’s courtyard with the addition of a pavilion, picnic tables, heaters, lighting, and landscaping (Bryan Alba, Alyssa Lebiszczak, Kyleigh Miller, and Alanna Robins)
  • Whippets Go Green, an $11,568 proposal to install a greenhouse aimed at connecting students and staff with agriculture.  This group (Analise Escarraman, Elijah Jenkins, Alex Lee, Andrea Quinones, Justice Rivera, and Joel Sotelo) hopes to provide farm-to-table foods within the school, as well as start a career pathway program for students.
  • Inclusion Solution:  Coming in at $19,000, just below the maximum project budget of $20,000, this initiative would bring a diversity fair to the Windham community.  This proposal was presented by Resia Baran and Geraldine Gonzalez.

All of the students did a wonderful job, and we look forward to seeing the results of their voting!

We will post updates on our website once the winners are announced.
