The State of Connecticut voted to change the entrance age requirement for Kindergarten entry. Beginning with the 2024-25 school year, students entering Kindergarten must be 5-years-old on or before September 1, 2024. Effective July 1, 2024, a child who is not five years old on or before September 1st of the school year may be admitted upon written request by the child’s parent/guardian and after the district conducts an assessment of the child to ensure that admitting the child to Kindergarten would be developmentally appropriate. Good Afternoon Windham Community, I would like to share some updates and reminders with you. First, we are about one week into our district survey for students in grades 3-12, all of our families and our certified and non-certified staff members. We are interested in gathering the survey data to identify the things we are doing well and create action plans to address the areas we need to improve. If you have not already completed the survey, you still have time. The survey window will remain open through January 9, 2024. Families, please visit the home page of our district website (windhamps.org) to find the family survey link. Students in grades 3-12 will take the survey at school at some point during the survey window. Staff members were provided a link to their survey through staff email. I thank you all in advance for responding to the district survey and helping our schools, departments and the school district as a whole to improve. Next, this is a friendly reminder that the schools will be closed for winter break starting with an early dismissal on Friday, December 22nd, through Monday, January 1, 2024. Students will return to school on Tuesday, January 2nd. Let’s keep our positive attendance trends in the new year. Finally, I would like to remind our families of our Three Kings Day Cultural Celebration being held on Saturday, January 6th from 11am-2pm at Windham’s Community & Senior Center located at 1 Jillson Square in Willimantic. Families interested in attending this event must register through their school website or contact their family liaison. Registration is OPEN for Parent & Community University - October 21st! Windham Public Schools is hosting Parent & Community University on Saturday, October 21, 2023 from 8:30am-2:00pm at the Windham Community/Senior Center. PCU is a one-day event that will offer FREE workshops for parents/guardians/community members. These workshops are geared towards developing a greater understanding of what happens within our schools and community. We will be offering breakfast, lunch and childcare for this event as well as information from local agencies and organizations. Please contact your Family Liaison or visit our district website to register for this event. Please be aware - CT Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS) - Informational Message - National Alerting Test The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) plans a nationwide mobile alert test that will send an emergency SMS to all cell phones in the United States. In coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the national test will be administered at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, October 4. It will consist of two portions that will test Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and Emergency Alert System (EAS) capabilities. The WEA portion of the test will be directed to all consumer cell phones. The messaging will be displayed in either English or Spanish, depending on the language settings of the phone. The EAS portion of the test will be sent to radios and televisions.
